Although school is out until August 27, my brain keeps functioning and I try to occupy myself with little activities. Yahoo! crossword puzzles and online chatting are both fun, but I've discovered there is life away from the computer. I've been trying my hand at cleaning closets and washing window blinds and find that I need to pace myself. I've also bought a book to read (it's a chapter book!), but I haven't started it yet.
While still surfing online, searching for ways I might mount a few fans to my classroom walls, I ran across some interesting-looking chess sets. I got Stephanie involved and we stood at Lowe's Home Improvement store for almost three hours scheming and examining nuts and bolts. Stephanie came up with the final design for these chessmen, and together we assembled them at home. Nuts and bolts and super glue.

If anyone's interested, I made up a supply list and basic assembly sequence.

The Completed Project

After completing the pieces, Stephanie and I made a board on which to play. A little sanding, a lot of measuring and a little painting got the job done.
Next week Catherine and I go to Cheer Camp for four days. A far cry from chess and another great opportunity to hang with one of my girls.

So cool! Amazing the things you find time for now that school is out for awhile. Very neat that you are even finding some time for cleaning closets and washing window blinds. I'm impressed! And I know only too well that those kinds of jobs are wearing, but it's always so nice when they are done and things are so clean and organized. What is Cheer camp by the way? A Cheerleading clinic?
Yes, Cheer camp is for cheerleading. And the last place one would expect to find me!
Catherine is a captain on the cheerleading squad, and she and 11 other girls are going to Tacoma, WA, for the cheerleading clinic with their adult sponsor. Another adult is needed to help supervise and though I have no coordination for and little interest in cheer, I am available and very willing to help out. It'll be a bonding experience!
